Roman Scutum Shield

The Scutum literally
"shield", was the main form of body protection of the
Roman soldiers in the 1st Century. It served the purpose to deflect
missiles targeted at the soldiers, as well as protect them from the
impact of hand held weapons wielded at them. The shields large size
allowed the soldiers to form a "tustudo'' or shield wall that
could protect them during an advance. These large barriers also were
able to swivel easily during close combat, preventing easy
disablement by the attacker.

the re-enactor and decorator, the Stuart Targe replicates a piece
dating to the '45 Jacobite rising and the original is said to have
been made as a gift for Bonnie Prince Charlie. Construction is
tooled leather over wood with a goatskin backing and silver plated
decorations. The arm strap and hand grip are leather covered. Like
the original, the targe is about 19" in diameter.

reproduction of the shield prominently featured in the opening
battle scene of the first movie of the The Lord of the Rings
trilogy. The High Elven Warrior Shield is a reflection of the
artistic craftsmanship of Elven weapons and armor in Middle Earth.
Measuring 54 1/2" L x 20 7/8" W, this meticulously
